Fourteen years ago, Shanquita embarked on her candle-making journey in her grandmother's kitchen. What began as a way to generate extra income, selling candles out of the trunk of her car, soon transformed into an inspiring tale of resilience and entrepreneurship. The events of September 11th, which led to her departure from her role as a flight attendant for United Airlines, became the pivotal moment that propelled her into the world of business ownership.
"After watching a holiday episode of Martha Stewart," recalls Shanquita, "I decided to invest a $467.00 paycheck in myself. Every day, I now have the privilege of doing what I love. I've grown from being an employee with a $467.00 paycheck to becoming a thriving business owner."
Shanquita attributes her entrepreneurial spirit to her genetics and her passion for mathematics. Her eight-year service in the United States Airforce, where she worked with T38 bombers and conducted aircraft inspections for NASA's F16 and F17 fighter jets, instilled in her the boldness, strength, and determination needed to triumph. Beyond her business commitments, Shanquita actively engages as a community activist, focusing on providing practical job skills and training to the city's disabled community.
A prominent figure within the Settegast and Greater Ward communities, Shanquita firmly believes in the power of giving back. Her brainchild, Simply Scents Candle Company, boasts a diverse range of products including triple-scented candles, room fragrant sprays, wax melts, oil burners, reed diffusers, and much more.
